New Area Code Implementation Plan

Oct. 7, 2007 – Permissive Dialing Begins
The new 575 area code becomes active. During this 12-month permissive dialing period, callers can use either the old 505 area code or the new 575 area code when calling locations in New Mexico that have been assigned the new area code. The PRC approved a longer-than-usual permissive dialing period so that residents and businesses have more time to become accustomed to the new area code.

Oct. 5, 2008 – Recorded Announcement/Mandatory Dialing Period
During this period, all calls into areas of the state that have been assigned the new area code must be dialed using 575. Callers who dial the wrong area code will get a recorded message advising him or her to redial using 575.

After Jan. 11, 2009, telephone companies will be able to assign the same seven-digit telephone numbers in both New Mexico area codes. Therefore, callers who use the wrong area code may be connected to an untended party. If the mis-dialed call is not connected to another line, the caller will hear a generic recorded message advising that “the call could not be completed as dialed.”
